Erotic Embroidery

Erotic Embroidery

**This is a 6-week course. Your registration fee includes 1 class per week for 6 weeks**

[Fall Quarter / Term I] 9/9/19 – 10/18/19
[Wednesdays] 6:30PM – 8:30PM

Over the six weeks, students will learn basic pattern making, embroidery, and hand sewing skills. Each week, students will work on embroidery stitches that build upon what they’ve learned in previous weeks; the final weeks of the class will end with the students learning how to transform their embroideries into objects – dirty pillows!

Materials Fee:

Students are responsible for providing their own materials:
  • FABRIC – 2 yards. 1 of heavy cotton, solid lighter colors are best. If you must choose a pattern, something not too busy, or with a smaller repeat; toille is always fun. 1 yard of stretch corduroy for the back in a complimentary or contrasting color.
  • FLOSS – 1-3 skeins colors in your choice, but obviously colors you like with the fabric.
  • THREAD – 1 spool of sewing thread in a color very close to at least one of the materials.
  • PILLOW 14”x14” – 16”x16”
  • PINS
  • AN IRON (only needed the first night)

The majority of these materials can be found at International Silks and Woolens on Beverly, Joann’s, or Michael Levine DTLA.

Teacher Bio: Ellen Schinderman

As an artist, I use stitch to counter destruct social structures of patriarchal beauty standards, sexual manipulation, and body shaming. I try to turn tired societal paradigms on their heads. Some of the first items I made, when I fell down this rabbit hole, were, “dirty pillows,” “cause every woman has them.” We’re gonna do that!
